How does traditional liposuction differ from the latest technologies such as Laser or Ultrasonic assisted Liposuction?
Suction-Assisted Lipectomy or Liposuction, has been the traditional method of aesthetic fat removal for many years. In this approach, a small cannula (thin metal tube) that is attached to a vacuum device, is inserted through a small incision in the skin. During the liposuction procedure, the surgeon pushes and pulls the suction cannula carefully through the fat layer, breaking up the fat cells and drawing them out of the body by suction.
Traditional liposuction is effective, but requires extended recovery time. For areas with large fat deposits, traditional liposuction can be a very physically draining and lengthy procedure, often requiring the use of general anesthesia.
SmartLipo is a FDA approved laser which is inserted through a small incision in the skin. The laser beam from the SmartLipo effectively melts the fatty layer it comes in contact with. During the procedure, the laser causes the small blood vessels to coagulate on contact, which results in minimal bleeding, swelling and bruising. In addition to liquefying the fat, the SmartLipo laser also aids in collagen production. This production of collagen will aid in tightening surrounding skin when the body is going through the healing and remodeling phase.
VASER Liposuction is a FDA approved device that uses the power of ultrasonic energy (sound waves) to emulsify fat. This method allows for easier removal than traditional methods. The VASER is able to target the unwanted fat and leave the surrounding tissue largely unaffected by preserving the fibrous connective tissue between the skin and underlying muscle fascia, thus more rapid healing for the patient. This modern technology allows the physician to give the patient the custom contouring that he or she is seeking, all with less downtime than traditional liposuction.
Advantages of using Vaser or SmartLipo
- Less recovery time
- Minimal and easily concealed scarring
- Ability to have the procedure without going under general anesthesia
- More precise contouring of the desired body shape
- Less bruising
- The ability to assist your body in the production of collagen
- Gentle procedure that can be done within a couple hours
With any fat removal procedure, it is imperative to make sure that your physician has experience with the technique, and can show you work that they have performed. Sculpting bodies is akin to sculpting art, and it’s always better to have a master by your side. Dr. Brian Kerr, is committed to bring each client their desired results.
“Using my skills as an artist and anesthesiologist with a cosmetic training, I treat each of my patients as a canvas, using an artist’s eye to sculpt areas of the body just as I can sculpt a piece of clay into a work of art.” – Dr. Brian Kerr, MD
