A chin augmentation, also known as genioplasty/mentoplasty, is a surgery performed to enhance the chin with the use of a silicone implant. Often, a chin implant is used to balance facial proportions, make the profile more aesthetically appealing, define an underdeveloped chin, and to improve the self-confidence of the patient.
What does the surgery involve?
A chin augmentation is typically performed by surgically placing an implant directly on the bone. Small incisions can be placed either under the skin of the chin or inside the mouth. Through the incision, Dr. Nealy is able to place the implant and fit it around the mandible. The incision is then closed with sutures.

Who is a candidate?
Chin augmentation surgery is a personalized procedure to each individual patient. Good candidates for chin implant surgery include patients who:
- Are physically healthy and at a stable weight
- Are nonsmokers
- Have a weak or recessed chin
- Aren’t happy about the appearance of their chin or profile
What results can I expect?
The use of a chin implant helps enhance the projection of the chin, leaving you with a more angular appearance. The neck will look leaner, the jawline will be more defined, and facial features will look more balanced.
Are facial implants permanent?/How long does the implant last?
Silicone chin implants are made to be durable and will last forever.
What can I expect from the recovery?
Chin augmentation surgery requires a relatively short downtime. Typically, patients are able to return to work and other normal activities within a few days following the procedure. A compression garment may be required to help minimize swelling, and a combination of medication and cold compresses can help with any discomfort.
Patients whose incision is made in the mouth may be put on a liquid diet for the first few days of their recovery. For the first two weeks after the chin implant procedure, patients are required to sleep face up with their head elevated to help protect the implant and help with healing. Swelling usually subsides within 2 weeks after surgery, but full results may take a few months to be seen.
