Laser Hair Removal FAQs
What are the Benefits of Laser Hair Removal?
The primary benefit of laser hair removal is it results in permanent hair removal and hair reduction. Some of our staff haven’t had to shave in 11 years. Throw your razors away!
How Does Laser Hair Removal Work?
Laser hair removal is based on selective damage to hair follicles while leaving the skin undamaged. During the process of laser hair removal, light is absorbed by melanin in the hair shaft and hair follicle and is converted into heat energy, thereby raising the hair temperature. When the temperature is high enough, irreversible damage occurs to the hair structures and thus growth of the hair is prevented.
The laser works by disabling hairs that are in their active growth cycle at the time of treatment. Since other hairs will enter their growth cycle at different times, additional treatments may be necessary to disable all of the follicles in a given area.
What Areas Can Be Treated with Laser Hair Removal?
We have extremely great results of facial laser hair removal, but hair can be removed on any area of the body including your legs, back, neck, under arms, hands, arms, inside the ears, inside the nose, and even pubic and anal areas. We avoid the area underneath the eyebrows to prevent any possible damage to the eyes.
Is Laser Hair Removal Safe? What are the Risks of Laser Hair Removal?
Our laser is built in such a way that it’s virtually impossible to permanently damage skin. Safety parameters are set so that the machine cannot use energy levels that would be harmful. We wear protective laser goggles during treatment to protect the eyes.
The FDA approved the first laser for hair removal way back in 1964. In 1983, advances developed the pulse duration used today that allows the energy to target the hair follicle without damaging the skin. Point is, laser hair removal has been performed millions of times around the globe and it is a safe and very effective procedure. That said, there are dangers of burns and hyperpigmentation if inexperienced, untrained practitioners perform laser hair removal. At Silk Touch, we’ve performed thousands of laser hair removal treatments and have a mile-long list of satisfied patients. In fact, we were the first to bring laser hair removal to the Treasure Valley in 1999.
Generally, any side effects are minor and last just a day or two. You may have some redness across the treatment areas, slight swelling, and some minor discomfort.
Is Laser Hair Removal Painful?
At Silk Touch, we go out of our way to keep you comfortable during your laser hair removal sessions. Some patients prefer to have topical numbing cream with lidocaine applied prior to their session, especially if they are having hair removed on a very sensitive area. That is up to you. Other patients don’t request numbing cream and they equate the feeling when the laser pulses are delivered to that of the skin being snapped with a small rubber band. Our lasers have a cooling function immediately after the laser energy is pulsed for further patient comfort.
Who Performs the Laser Hair Removal Treatment?
Our certified laser technicians are highly skilled and perform all treatments under the direction of Dr. Brian C. Kerr, MD. Your comfort and privacy is important to us.
What Do I Need to Do to Prepare for My Laser Hair Removal Session?
There are just a few steps to take to make your laser hair removal as effective as possible.
- Stay Out of the Sun – It helps the laser wavelength direct the optimal amount of energy onto the hair if the hair color and skin color are quite different. Our lasers can remove hair on different skin tones, but it is most effective when there is contrast. So, we ask our patients to not tan or darken their skin for at least one month prior to their appointment.
- No Plucking – Don’t wax or pluck your unwanted hair for 4-6 weeks prior to your appointment. This step ensures that the hair is actively anchored in the hair follicles. You can still shave, as that doesn’t have any effect on the hair follicles.
- Shave the Night Before – Finally, the night before your treatment closely shave the area with the unwanted hair (again, this leaves plenty of hair shaft down in the follicle to absorb the laser energy).
What Can I Expect After My Laser Hair Removal Session?
Occasionally, we have a patient who is surprised to see the hair still there after their session. They thought the laser literally zapped the hair. Nope. The energy used is way too low for that. Plus, that would only remove the shaft, similar to shaving, and the follicle would still be intact and growing hair. When you return home after your session at Silk Touch, your hair will still be there and your skin will be slightly red. This can seem disappointing — after all, your results with waxing and the like provide instant results. But the vehicle for the unwanted hair growth is now damaged or destroyed. Without the follicle to anchor them, the hairs will begin to fall out over the following days. You need to be patient and not pluck or scrub the hairs to accelerate their falling out. Let them do it on their timeframe.
After a few days, it will look like there is new hair growing on the treatment areas. This can be even more disconcerting, but don’t worry. This is a sign that the laser energy was successful in zapping the follicles. Hair that was down below the skin in the follicles is being pushed out and shed.
Remember, not all of the hair in the treatment area will fall out. The hair that was in the growth phase will, but other hairs that weren’t will still be there. Usually the affected hair will be about 20 percent of the total during that session. That’s why multiple sessions are necessary — to catch more and more hair in the growth phase.
How Many Laser Hair Removal Treatments will I Need?
6-10 treatments on average are needed. All clinical studies to date support this data. All technology used in laser hair removal work on the same basic principle: They all target the melanin in the hair that is in its growth cycle. Only a certain percentage of your hair is in its growth cycle at any given time, thus, multiple treatments are needed. The number of treatments varies with each person based on their hair growth pattern and their skin type.
Avoid claims of all hair gone in 3 treatments. Usually such claims are made by inexperienced businesses attempting to attract clientele.
How Long Should I Wait Between Treatments?
You should wait 4-8 weeks between treatments depending on the area of the body that is being treated.
Is Laser Hair Removal Permanent?
The hair follicles that are destroyed during treatment are permanently disabled. Through the natural process of aging and hormonal changes, previously quiescent follicles may be recruited. We provide economical treatments if future touch ups are needed.
That being said, the FDA has approved the GentleLase Plus and other similar lasers for “permanent hair reduction”. No laser can claim to permanently remove all hair. To date, studies on hair removal lasers have reported that 80% of subjects receive 95% hair loss. 20% of subjects showed reduction or delayed hair growth.
A 15 month study on 126 patients with an alexandrite laser showed 75-95% hair reduction after multiple treatments (3-6). Our personal experience has shown between 85-90% of all our clients have achieved their desired hair loss.*
How Long Does Laser Hair Removal Treatment Take?
One treatment session takes 10 minutes to 1 hour depending on the site of treatment. For example, you lips or chin can take less than 5 minutes, while your back or legs can take up to an hour.
|Body Part||Treatment Time (Minutes)|
|Skin Rejuvenation – Face||5 – 10|
|Skin Rejuvenation – Chest||30 – 45|
|Hair Removal – Bikini||5|
|Hair Removal – Under Arm||3|
|Hair Removal – Legs||15 – 60|
|Hair Removal – Back||30 – 45|
How Much Does Laser Hair Removal Cost?
The laser hair removal cost varies depending on the area of the body. Prices can be as low as $100 per treatment. We pride ourselves in offering affordable prices, and we recognize that this is a substantial investment. We don’t want it to be just a rich-man’s luxury. Our goal is to provide affordable treatment to “the many” rather than expensive treatments to “a few.”
Our treatments start at $100 for a small area and can cost $1500+ for a larger areas. This laser hair removal cost includes multiple treatments. We deliver success and our clients pass the word on to their friends. Become a Silk Touch Member and receive the most affordable prices in the valley.
Can You Treat Tanned Skin?
Claims that lasers can treat ALL skin type(s), including tanned skin, are not entirely accurate. To treat tanned skin, all lasers to date must reduce the energy level to avoid damaging the skin. We discourage tanning before treatment to make your treatment safer and more effective.
What if I Have Darker Skin?
We have been successful in treating Hispanic, Basque, and lighter African-American skin within the Treasure Valley. Depending on the degree of pigmentation, we will begin treatments at a more conservative level and increase the energy level as tolerated. We have the option to increase the cryogen spray to better protect the skin.
Can You Treat Blonde of White Hair?
Lighter pigmented hair is not as responsive to long term removal. All current technology for hair removal has higher success with darker hair.

I would like to thank Silk Touch Med Spa, Laser, & Lipo and their wonderful staff. I had been receiving treatments at Ideal Image for over a year and was not completely happy with their service, or their prices. A friend of mine from work went to Silk Touch and met with Deloria, and insisted that I set up an appointment with her as soon as possible. I was completely impressed with the friendly staff, the relaxing and comfortable atmosphere, and the very affordable prices. Deloria has been absolutely great to work with, and I really appreciate her professionalism. I would highly recommend Silk Touch to anyone who wants to receive excellent service at fabulous prices!*
