Laser Hair Removal

Laser hair removal is the best way to permanently reduce unwanted hair. At Silk Touch Cosmetic Surgery, Lipo and Medspa, our lasers are approved by the FDA for permanent hair reduction. We are pioneers in the field of laser hair removal, bringing it to the Treasure Valley in 1999.

How does it work?

During the process of laser hair removal, light is absorbed by melanin in the hair shaft and is converted into heat energy, thereby raising the hair temperature. When the temperature is high enough, the hair follicles are impaired and thus growth of the hair is prevented.

At the time of treatment, the laser disables hair follicles that are currently in their active growth cycle. Since other hairs will enter their growth cycle at different times, additional treatments may be necessary to disable all of the follicles in a given area.

Who can be treated with laser hair removal?

Depending on the degree of pigmentation, we will begin treatments at a more conservative level and increase the energy level as tolerated. We use cryogen spray as a cooling method to reduce or eliminate injury to the skin during laser treatments. If needed, we have the option to increase the cryogen spray if the treatment becomes uncomfortable.

Lighter pigmented hair is not as responsive to long term removal. All current technology for hair removal has higher success with darker hair.

What areas can be treated with laser hair removal?

Hair can be removed anywhere on the body including the face, legs, back, neck, under arms, hands, arms, inner ears, and even pubic and anal areas. We avoid the area underneath the eyebrows to prevent any possible damage to the eyes.

How to prepare for laser hair removal:

  • Stay out of the sun - It helps the laser wavelength direct the optimal amount of energy onto the hair if the hair color and skin color are quite different. Our lasers can remove hair on different skin tones, but it is most effective when there is contrast. For best results, we ask our patients to reduce sun and artificial sun (tanning bed) exposure for at least one month prior to their appointment.
  • No plucking - Don’t wax or pluck your unwanted hair for 4-6 weeks prior to your appointment. This step ensures that the hair is actively anchored in the hair follicles. You can still shave, as that doesn’t have an effect on the hair follicles.
  • Shave the night before - Finally, the night before your treatment closely shave the area with the unwanted hair (again, this leaves plenty of hair shaft down in the follicle to absorb the laser energy).

Laser Hair Removal FAQs

Yes, laser hair removal is safe when done by an experienced provider. Our laser is built in such a way that it’s virtually impossible to permanently damage skin. Safety parameters are set so that the machine cannot use energy levels that would be harmful. In addition, protective laser goggles are worn during the treatment to protect the eyes.

At Silk Touch, we go out of our way to keep you comfortable during your laser hair removal sessions. Some patients prefer to have topical numbing cream with lidocaine applied prior to their session, especially if they are having hair removed on a very sensitive area. Other patients don’t request numbing cream and they equate the feeling to that of the skin being snapped with a small rubber band. Regardless, our lasers have a cooling function immediately after the laser energy is pulsed for further patient comfort.

When you return home after your session at Silk Touch, your hair will still be there and your skin will be slightly red. After a few days, it will look like there is new hair growing on the treatment areas. This is a sign that the laser energy was successful in zapping the follicles. Hair that was down below the skin in the follicles is being pushed out and shed.

Note, not all of the hair in the treatment area will fall out as the lasers are only able to affect the hair follicles that were in their active growth phase. Usually the affected hair will be about 20 percent of the total during that session, so it’s typical that multiple sessions will be needed.

Typically, 6-10 treatments on average are needed. The number of treatments varies with each person based on their hair growth pattern and their skin type. We recommend our patients wait 4-8 weeks between treatments depending on the area of the body that is being treated.

The hair follicles that are impaired during treatment are permanently disabled. Sometimes through the natural process of aging and hormonal changes, regrowth may be seen in previously dormant follicles. For patients who experience this, additional touch up treatments are available.

No laser can claim to permanently remove all hair. Our personal experience has shown between 85-90% of all our clients have achieved their desired hair loss.*

One treatment session can take anywhere from a few minutes to 1 hour depending on the site of treatment. For example, your lips or chin can take less than 5 minutes, while your back or legs can take up to an hour.

“I would like to thank Silk Touch Med Spa, Laser, & Lipo and their wonderful staff. I had been receiving treatments at Ideal Image for over a year and was not completely happy with their service, or their prices. A friend of mine from work went to Silk Touch and met with Deloria, and insisted that I set up an appointment with her as soon as possible. I was completely impressed with the friendly staff, the relaxing and comfortable atmosphere, and the very affordable prices. Deloria has been absolutely great to work with, and I really appreciate her professionalism. I would highly recommend Silk Touch to anyone who wants to receive excellent service at fabulous prices!*"
