Laser Hair Removal FAQ

Why choose Silk Touch Medspa?

We have the most experience in the Treasure Valley. We have done thousands of treatments since 1999, giving us an edge over other competitors. We have the experience and track record to know how to help you remove your unwanted hair!! We have treated a wide variety of clients, including those with darker skin.

How does Laser hair removal work?

Laser hair removal is based on selective damage to hair follicles while leaving the skin undamaged. During the process of hair removal, light is absorbed by melanin in the hair shaft and hair follicle and converted into heat energy, thereby raising the hair temperature. When the temperature is high enough, irreversible damage occurs to the hair structures and thus growth of the hair is prevented. The laser works by disabling hairs that are in their active growth cycle at the time of treatment. Since other hairs will enter their growth cycle at different times, additional treatments may be necessary to disable all of the follicles in a given area.

Can you remove hair anywhere on my body?

Hair can be removed on ANY area of the body, inside the ears, inside the nose, even pubic and anal areas. We avoid the area underneath the eyebrows to prevent any possible damage to the eyes.

Is it Safe?

Our laser is built in such a way that it’s virtually impossible to permanently damage skin. Safety parameters are set so that the machine cannot use energy levels that would be harmful. We wear protective laser goggles during treatment to protect the eyes.

Who does the treatment?

Our certified laser technicians are highly skilled and perform all treatments under the direction of Dr. Brian C. Kerr, MD.

BeforeAfter

Is it permanent?

The FDA has approved the GentleLase Plus and other similar lasers for “permanent hair reduction”. No laser can claim to permanently remove all hair. To date studies on hair removal lasers have reported that 80% of subjects receive 95% hair loss. 20% of subjects showed reduction or delayed hair growth. A 15 month study on 126 patients with an alexandrite laser showed 75-95% hair reduction after multiple treatments (3-6). Our personal experience shows between 85-90% of all our clients have achieved their desired hair loss.

Will it be gone forever?

The hair follicles that are destroyed during treatment are permanently disabled. Through the natural process of aging and hormonal changes, previously quiescent follicles may be recruited. We provide economical treatments if future touch ups are needed.

How long does it take?

10 minutes to 1 hour depending on the site of treatment. Lips & chin take less than 5 minutes while a back or legs can take up to an hour.

How much does it cost?

We pride ourselves in offering affordable prices. We recognize that this is a substantial investment. We don’t want it to be just a rich-man’s luxury. Our goal is to provide affordable treatment to “the many” rather than expensive treatments to “a few”. Our treatments start at $75 for a small area to $1500+ for a larger areas. This cost includes multiple treatments. We deliver success and our clients pass the word on to their friends.

How many treatments are needed?

6-10 treatments on average are needed. All clinical studies to date support this data. All technology used in laser hair removal work on the same basic principle: They all target the melanin in the hair that is in its growth cycle. Only a certain percentage of your hair is in its growth cycle at any given time, thus, multiple treatments are needed. The number of treatments varies with each person based on their hair growth pattern and their skin type. Avoid claims of all hair gone in 3 treatments. Usually such claims are made by inexperienced businesses attempting to attract clientele.

Which laser is best?

gentlelaseplus-laser1The GentleLase Laser is the most popular laser in the Treasure Valley. Why? Because it works! It also provides the most comfort to the client with the patented dynamic cooling system. Our GentleLase Plus laser uses technology less than a year old!

There are several other types and brands of lasers designed for hair removal. All remove hair. Ruby Lasers have been shown to be less effective than the newer technologies in well-controlled studies. Claims by competitors that their Technology makes “all other lasers obsolete” are completely unfounded. Avoid the hype and look for someone who can offer you the benefit of real world experience.

Are all lasers effective?   GentleLASE Challenge

Integrated computer controls assure consistent, reproducible protection, regardless of who is operating the laser. Our GentleLase Plus can  go side-by-side with any other hair removal device and prove to you that we are the fast and the most effective.  Broad band devices are not as effective for hair removal.  Many times practitioners purchase lasers that do many different things…but often they are not as effective at removing hair for that very reason.  This laser is made specifically for Hair Removal.

Can you treat tanned skin?

Claims that lasers can treat ALL skin type(s), including tanned skin are not entirely accurate. To treat tanned skin, all lasers to date must reduce the energy level to avoid damaging the skin. We discourage tanning before treatment to make your treatment safer and more effective.

What if I have darker skin?

We have been successful in treating Hispanic, Basque, and lighter African-American skin within the Treasure Valley. Depending on the degree of pigmentation, we will begin treatments at a more conservative level and increase the energy level as tolerated. We have the option to increase the cryogen spray to better protect the skin.

Can you treat blonde or white hair?

Lighter pigmented hair is not as responsive to long term removal. All current technology for hair removal has higher success with darker hair.

What are the risks, or side effects?

Temporary risks include:

  • Bruising (rare)
  • Purpura (purple coloring of the skin) on tanned areas
  • Redness
  • Swelling
  • Temporary pigment change (hypo-pigmentation or hyper-pigmentation)
  • Superficial burns (rug burns) in tanned or dark skin
  • Side effects occur infrequently and, as a rule, generally are temporary.

Who is a candidate for laser hair removal?

Both men and women seek the above mentioned services to have superfluous or unwanted hair removed. Hair removal is commonly done on the following areas: hairline, top of the nose, lip chin ear lobe, shoulders, back, underarm, abdomen, buttocks, pubic area, bikini lines, thighs, face, neck, breast, arms, legs, hands, and toes.

Why is Cryogen a better coolant?

GentleLase™ is the only permanent hair removal system that employs the patented Dynamic Cooling Device (DCD). The GentleLase Plus laser emits a beam that only heats the hair shaft. The heat is transmitted from the hair shaft to the surrounding tissue for several milliseconds after the laser pulse. The DCD produces a fine spray of cryogen, cooling the surrounding skin to fully cool the heat transmitted from the destroyed hair shafts.

The overall advantages to cryogen spray?

The spray does three things: it protects the skin from hurting; it protects the skin from burning; and most importantly, it puts the energy down below the skin where it needs to be to effectively destroy the hair follicle. In a nutshell, that’s why we’re able to work on darker skinned individuals.
